Comprehensive Accessibility Compliance Update for All Storefront UI Frameworks

AI Commerce Cloud storefronts now comply with EU accessibility regulations at the framework level, ensuring keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and structural accessibility best practices.

We’ve rolled out a major update to the AI Commerce Cloud storefront framework to comply with the EU’s accessibility legislation. This update addresses over 90% of known accessibility issues within the core UI code, without requiring any action from merchants for standard use cases.

Key improvements include:

• All functional elements now use proper <a> or <button> HTML elements for screen reader support.

• Buttons and clickable areas have been enlarged or spaced to meet accessibility touch target guidelines.

• A visual outline effect appears when navigating with a keyboard, supporting fully mouse-free ordering.

• Developers and partners can no longer bypass accessibility rules due to newly enforced restrictions in the build pipeline (e.g., svelte-ignore a11y is now blocked).

However, full compliance also depends on custom content and design choices made by merchants or partners:

• Brand color contrast issues and custom content created in WYSIWYG editors, WordPress, or Builder.io are not covered by the framework update.

• Some store-specific customizations may still require manual corrections.

• Merchants with over €2 million in annual revenue and at least 10 employees must legally maintain an accessibility statement.

To support this, our partner Idea Protege offers services for generating accessibility statements and auditing merchant-created content. Partners can also assist in updating custom content built with tools like Builder.io.

Important:

These UI updates will not be deployed to live environments until each partner has manually reviewed and confirmed the accessibility compliance of their respective storefronts. Until then, all production deployments involving UI changes are paused or strongly discouraged to avoid regressions.
